We Make Market Leaders
Welcome to the LeadCoverage weekly Market Intelligence.
Fuel costs are hammering every mode, from diesel to jet to vessel fuel, and freight is doing what it always does when the pump gets painful: finding another way to move. Truckload is sliding to rail, Los Angeles is soaking up cargo that used to bet on the Panama Canal, and airfreight is holding firm while AI hyperscalers hunt for peak space. Everybody is improvising, and the playbook gets rewritten weekly. Fill up and read on.

Diesel Stays High as Stockpiles Shrink
◆
Diesel Benchmarks Double: Wholesale diesel in the U.S. and Europe has more than doubled ▲ year to date despite emergency stock releases and eased limits on Russian exports, leading to sustained cost pressure across freight modes.
◆
A Refining Problem, Not Crude: New York Harbor distillate crack spreads are holding above $100 a barrel, leading the shortage to center on refined fuel rather than oil itself.
◆
East Coast Runs Thin: U.S. distillate inventories were down 12% ▼ year over year in the week ended Oct. 9, with East Coast stocks more than a fifth lower, leading to little margin for error as winter demand and refinery maintenance speed up draws.
Intermodal Jumps 10.4%: U.S. intermodal volume hit 302,252 units in the week ending Oct. 10, leading total rail traffic up 7.2% ▲ year over year.
◆
Diesel Pushes Trucks to Rail: High diesel prices and tighter enforcement raised trucking costs, leading shippers to convert truckload freight to intermodal.
LA Posts a Record Month: The Port of Los Angeles handled 1.04 million TEUs in September, its busiest month in 118 years, with loaded imports up 19% ▲, leading shippers to allocate about 5% more cargo to LA at origin.
◆
Fuel Makes Detours Costly: Port Executive Director Gene Seroka says vessel fuel prices doubled ▲ over eight months due to the Iran war, leading carriers to pass longer-route costs to shippers and favor direct West Coast calls.
Jet Fuel Costs Double: IATA’s Jet Fuel Price Monitor showed jet fuel up 3.1% ▲ in the week to Oct. 9 and 112% ▲ year over year due to the Middle East conflict, leading to upward pressure on airfreight pricing.
◆
Rates Dip, Then Hold: The Baltic Air Freight Index fell 2.1% ▼ as Chinese factories shut for Golden Week but remains up 24.3% ▲ year over year on higher jet fuel, the Middle East conflict and transpacific demand, leading TAC Index to expect a firm market into peak.
◆
Peak Space Is Spoken For: E-commerce and other large shippers have locked in peak capacity while AI hyperscalers have yet to secure space, leading to a risk of sharp rate jumps in the coming weeks.
